2 Nephi 9:36 - 9:40

2 Nephi 9:36 Wo unto them who commit whoredoms, for they shall be thrust down to hell.

To those who commit acts of terrorism, genesia, and persecutions which result in the death and misery of innocent peoples will spend a considerable amount of time in hell where they can learn just how evil they have been. Some, as stated in D&C 123:10, may fall under these categories in the “which dark and blackening deeds are enough to make hell itself shudder, and to stand aghast and pale, and the hands of the very devil to tremble and palsy.

2 Nephi 9:37 Yea, wo unto those that worship idols, for the devil of all devils delighteth in them.

To those who worship idols, such as cars, homes, clothing, luxuries of various kinds, the devils like that because it gets peoples mind off of God and the gospel.

2 Nephi 9:38 And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.

To those who continue committing sins to the end of their lives shall be of the same disposition when they finally met God. Unless one repents in this life or wants to, they will not change just because they enter the spirit world. The like and dislikes they have here will go with them into the spirit world unless they have been trying to correct them in life.

2 Nephi 9:39 O, my beloved brethren, remember the awfulness in transgressing against that Holy God, and also the awfulness of yielding to the enticings of that cunning one. Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal.

Jacob pleads that his people will try to picture the terrible condition of those who break the commandments and know they are doing it. In addition those who give up trying to resist the devil will be miserable too. To sum up, to yield to satan is to be cut off from God, but to yield to God is life of growth and progression forever.

2 Nephi 9:40 O, my beloved brethren, give ear to my words. Remember the greatness of the Holy One of Israel. Do not say that I have spoken hard things against you; for if ye do, ye will revile against the truth; for I have spoken the words of your Maker. I know that the words of truth are hard against all uncleanness; but the righteous fear them not, for they love the truth and are not shaken.

Jacob pleads with his people to listen to what he has said and live up to them. Remember we are trying to become like God and He is so far above us in goodness and knowledge. Jacob knows his words seem to be hard on the wicked but if a person will revile Jacob for what he has said then they are wicked. The righteous on the other hand will rejoice in what he has said because they agree with them and are trying to live up to them and want others to do so, so they can have the same peace and happiness they have.
