2 Nephi 5:6 - 5:10

2 Nephi 5:6 Wherefore, it came to pass that I, Nephi, did take my family, and also Zoram and his family, and Sam, mine elder brother and his family, and Jacob and Joseph, my younger brethren, and also my sisters, and all those who would go with me. And all those who would go with me were those who believed in the warnings and the revelations of God; wherefore, they did hearken unto my words.

Nephi takes all that will follow him and leaves his other brothers and probably the sons of Ishmael too and their families. Nephi knows what will happen to the children his brothers, but there is little he can do. He can take some comfort from the blessing left by his father on their heads.

Anyway Nephi takes, Sam, Jacob, Joseph, Zoram his sisters and their families. And also anyone else that wants to follow the Lord. Those who go with Nephi know that if they stay with the Laman and Lemuel, they will some lose the influence of the Holy Ghost. I wonder if any of the wives or children of these older brothers would have like to have gone with Nephi? I can image that there were bonds between the sisters who married the older brothers and those who married Nephi and Sam and Zoram. There had to be some strong emotions with the splitting up of the sisters, daughters of Ishmael anyway.

2 Nephi 5:7 And we did take our tents and whatsoever things were possible for us, and did journey in the wilderness for the space of many days. And after we had journeyed for the space of many days we did pitch our tents.

They take what they could and traveled for many days. I’m sure they wanted to get as far as possible so they could not be found easily by Laman and Lemuel at some future time. Don’t know how much they took with them or if they had to leave in a hurry, but they takes basic needs and now look for a place to start over. Nephi's desire is to live according to the commandments of God in peace without the continuous murmurings of Laman and Lemuel.

2 Nephi 5:8 And my people would that we should call the name of the place Nephi; wherefore, we did call it Nephi.

The place they settle is called Nephi. It was called Nephi it is a usual practice to call a place is after the person or leader of the group that settled it.

2 Nephi 5:9 And all those who were with me did take upon them to call themselves the people of Nephi.

Those who did follow Nephi were now called Nephites.

2 Nephi 5:10 And we did observe to keep the judgments, and the statutes, and the commandments of the Lord in all things, according to the law of Moses.

Now this group could live the law of Moses and other principles without ridicule and with all the passion they wanted too.
