Jacob 7:6 - 7:10

Jacob 7:6 But behold, I shall take these plates, which contain these prophesyings and revelations, and put them with the remainder of my record, for they are choice unto me; and I know they will be choice unto my brethren.

A meeting does take place and Sherem begins by calling Jacob: Brother Jacob. Sherem says that he has heard that Jacob is going about preaching the doctrine of Christ and Sherem wants to talk to him about that. [Sherem has a great deal of arrogance here. He thinks he can convince anyone of anything that he takes a notion to promote. And he wants another feather in his cap by taking on Jacob.]

Jacob 7:7 And I do this for a wise purpose; for thus it whispereth me, according to the workings of the Spirit of the Lord which is in me. And now, I do not know all things; but the Lord knoweth all things which are to come; wherefore, he worketh in me to do according to his will.

Sherem accuses Jacob of perverting the right way of God by not keeping the law of Moses. That Jacob has twisted the law into saying that it is for the worship of some being that is to come hundreds of years in the future. Sherem stands boldly before Jacob, the leader of the people and the successor to Nephi and says that having knowledge of things in the future is not possible. No one can know the events of the future he said. [This was Sherem’s main point of contention with Jacob. It just was not possible to see into the future and see events or people that will exist hundreds of even thousands of years into the future. Sherem either did not understand the law of Moses was specifically designed to teach the people not only about the mission of this savior and but that it would be in the future and just how the sacrifice of his life would happen or he was trying to convince people of his position in spite of the fact he knew as well.]

Jacob 7:8 And my prayer to God is concerning my brethren, that they may once again come to the knowledge of God, yea, the redemption of Christ; that they may once again be a delightsome people.

Jacob relates that the Lord gave him the words to say to Sherem and how to stop him in his lying words.

Jacob 7:9 And now I, Mormon, proceed to finish out my record, which I take from the plates of Nephi; and I make it according to the knowledge and the understanding which God has given me.

Jacob now sets Sherem up to either repent of his sins or be destroyed if he refuses to acknowledge his errors. Jacob asks him if he believes in Christ and that he should come in the future? Sherem now understands that he is in a bad spot that his words have not shaken Jacob in anyway. Jacob will now interrogate Sherem and get him to say what is his real position in regards to Christ. Sherem responds by saying that if there should be a Christ in our mist now, he would not deny him, but since there is not, this is proof that there will never be one nor has one ever existed in the past.

Jacob 7:10 Wherefore, it came to pass that after Amaleki had delivered up these plates into the hands of king Benjamin, he took them and put them with the other plates, which contained records which had been handed down by the kings, from generation to generation until the days of king Benjamin.

Jacob then asks him if he believes the scriptures and Sherem says he does.
