Mosiah 13:16 - 13:20

Mosiah 13:16 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

(Commandment #4). One is to observe the Sabbath day and behave as directed on that one day in seven.
[It is interesting that the word “remember” is used as part of the commandment. I think it means to think about the Sabbath day during the week. That one should behave and act as if the Sabbath day was tomorrow not four of five days away and therefore one doesn’t need to think about the spiritual preparation it normally takes to live it properly.]

Mosiah 13:17 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;

One is to work for six days, but on the Sabbath, one is to rest from work and give close attention to the Lord. He is to be the center of that day, not our occupations.

Mosiah 13:18 But the seventh day, the sabbath of the Lord thy God, thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;

This working includes all that are within your household. Not the children or servants or even guest that are staying with you are to work. This is the Lord’s day and everyone is be pay their devotions to Him on that day.
[Again it is not get people to jump to his every command as a dictator, but so that He can teach them the plan of happiness and they can learn how to do what will bring them personal happiness and happiness to those around him.]

Mosiah 13:19 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The Sabbath day is to be a holy day. A special day when the individual is to do only things that will bring him closer to God. It is in remembrance of the fact that the Lord worked for six days making the earth and rested from his work on the seventh.
[It is a day of thinking of higher things rather than how to get head or getting more of the world’s goods which are really of no worth in the next world. You can’t take it with you, but you can take your experiences of devotion and service to your fellow man.]

Mosiah 13:20 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

(Commandment #5). Respect your parents and care for them in time of distress or your time in the country you live in is numbered.
[The only commandment with a promise. Why? Simple, if we are not respectful of our parents, we are not interested in the family. If we are not interested in the family which is the basis of civilization, then that country will cease to exist in time will be destroyed. That is why the Church spends so much time talking about families and what it takes to keep them together.]
