Mosiah 29:16 - 29:20

Mosiah 29:16 Now I say unto you, that because all men are not just it is not expedient that ye should have a king or kings to rule over you.

Again Mosiah reiterates that if the people could always have a good man to rule over them, then a kingship is definitely the way to govern.
[Wonder if this only applies to the Nephites because of their temperament or to all peoples regardless to time or place? I think it is the latter. When you see the way the Church is run today, one sees the wisdom of one good righteous man to rule. Decisions are made quickly and actions put into place without necessarily having to debate what or how to solve problems.]

Mosiah 29:17 For behold, how much iniquity doth one wicked king cause to be committed, yea, and what great destruction!

However the danger is that a man who is made king can turn to wicked ways and cause much dissension and contention among the people.

Mosiah 29:18 Yea, remember king Noah, his wickedness and his abominations, and also the wickedness and abominations of his people. Behold what great destruction did come upon them; and also because of their iniquities they were brought into bondage.

Mosiah reminds them of the behavior of king Noah and the destruction he brought upon his people and to himself. Mosiah also reminds them of the bondage many of them were under to the Lamanites and the efforts they went through to escape their subjection.

Mosiah 29:19 And were it not for the interposition of their all-wise Creator, and this because of their sincere repentance, they must unavoidably remain in bondage until now.

And if it had not been for the peoples genuine repentance and desire to now live the commandments of God they would still be living like slaves even now to the Lamanites.

Mosiah 29:20 But behold, he did deliver them because they did humble themselves before him; and because they cried mightily unto him he did deliver them out of bondage; and thus doth the Lord work with his power in all cases among the children of men, extending the arm of mercy towards them that put their trust in him.

The result of their genuine repentance was God directly intervening and freeing them from the Lamanites. Their sincere prayers along with doing as their righteous leaders advised them to do cause the Lord to free them. This lesson was to show that in every case, the Lord will help folks who put their fate in His hands. He will deliver very time.
