Alma 1:6 - 1:10

Alma 1:6 And he began to be lifted up in the pride of his heart, and to wear very costly apparel, yea, and even began to establish a church after the manner of his preaching.

Nehor’s success among the easily influenced Nephites began to pay dividends for him. He now had money to buy expensive clothing which in turn helped boast his growing ego. The church he established was growing in popularity as well.
[Again we see this very thing happening with the TV evangelist. Check out their clothing and the expensive building they build for themselves and their congregations.]

Alma 1:7 And it came to pass as he was going, to preach to those who believed on his word, he met a man who belonged to the church of God, yea, even one of their teachers; and he began to contend with him sharply, that he might lead away the people of the church; but the man withstood him, admonishing him with the words of God.

One day in Nehor’s proselyting efforts, he ran into a faithful teacher in the real Church. Nehor thought he could also persuade him to his doctrines, but was meant with stiff verbal opposition by this teacher. This contention grew ever bitter, but the teacher’s words reputed Nehor on every point.

Alma 1:8 Now the name of the man was Gideon; and it was he who was an instrument in the hands of God in delivering the people of Limhi out of bondage.

The teacher was none other than Gideon the man who help Ammon to deliver Limhi and his people some years before.

Alma 1:9 Now, because Gideon withstood him with the words of God he was wroth with Gideon, and drew his sword and began to smite him. Now Gideon being stricken with many years, therefore he was not able to withstand his blows, therefore he was slain by the sword.

Well, Nehor was getting angrier and angrier until he lost it. He pulled his sword and was going to kill Gideon. Gideon was old by this time and could not defended himself against the younger and much stronger man that Nehor was. As a result, Gideon was killed while trying to defend himself.

Alma 1:10 And the man who slew him was taken by the people of the church, and was brought before Alma, to be judged according to the crimes which he had committed.

Nehor was taken into custody for murder and brought to Alma the chief judge to be prosecuted for his crime.
