Alma 2:31 - 2:38

Alma 2:31 Now when Alma had said these words he contended again with Amlici; and he was strengthened, insomuch that he slew Amlici with the sword.

After Alma’s prayer for additional help to fight against Amlici, Alma contended again against Amlici and finally killed him.
I an going to assume that Alma may have been wounded and had to withdraw for a bit to get his wound addressed and get his strength back.

Alma 2:32 And he also contended with the king of the Lamanites; but the king of the Lamanites fled back from before Alma and sent his guards to contend with Alma.

The king of the Lamanites was nearby so Alma then attacked him. However, the king ran and left his personal guards to contend with Alma.

Alma 2:33 But Alma, with his guards, contended with the guards of the king of the Lamanites until he slew and drove them back.

It was then a fight between Alma and his guards and the guards of the Lamanite king. The Lamanite guards were losing and were in retreat before Alma and his guards.

Alma 2:34 And thus he cleared the ground, or rather the bank, which was on the west of the river Sidon, throwing the bodies of the Lamanites who had been slain into the waters of Sidon, that thereby his people might have room to cross and contend with the Lamanites and the Amlicites on the west side of the river Sidon.

All this was happening on the west side of the River Sidon. As the fight continued, the number of dead was making it difficult for Alma and his army to fight the Lamanites. So the Nephites took a little time to throw the bodies of the dead into the River to clear the bank. The next move was to cross the river and attacked the Lamanites and Amlicites on the east side of the river.

Alma 2:35 And it came to pass that when they had all crossed the river Sidon that the Lamanites and the Amlicites began to flee before them, notwithstanding they were so numerous that they could not be numbered.

The Nephites now crossed the river and began to engage the combined Lamanite and Amlicite armies. With the Lord’s help, the battle was now turning in favor of the Nephites in spite of being vastly outnumber.

Alma 2:36 And they fled before the Nephites towards the wilderness which was west and north, away beyond the borders of the land; and the Nephites did pursue them with their might, and did slay them.

The enemy was now in full retreat and were fleeing towards the wilderness to both the west and north of Nephite territory. The Nephites did not let them go, but pursued the enemy, killing all that they were able to catch.
I’m sure that in the case of the Amlici’s followers that they would have to be illuminated as they would continue to stir up trouble by trying to get the Lamanites to come against the Nephites again in the future.

Alma 2:37 Yea, they were met on every hand, and slain and driven, until they were scattered on the west, and on the north, until they had reached the wilderness, which was called Hermounts; and it was that part of the wilderness which was infested by wild and ravenous beasts.

The enemy was engaged continuously. They were not allow to get away if the Nephites could catch them. They were now scattering towards the wilderness which was called Hermounts. And it was the part of the wilderness inhabited by wild and ravenous animals.

Alma 2:38 And it came to pass that many died in the wilderness of their wounds, and were devoured by those beasts and also the vultures of the air; and their bones have been found, and have been heaped up on the earth.

Those who managed to make it to the wildness but died of their wounds were eaten by these wild animals and by the vultures. Their bones were then piled up.
