Alma 14:26 - 14:29

Alma 14:26 And Alma cried, saying: How long shall we suffer these great afflictions, O Lord? O Lord, give us strength according to our faith which is in Christ, even unto deliverance. And they broke the cords with which they were bound; and when the people saw this, they began to flee, for the fear of destruction had come upon them.

After everyone had their go at Alma and Amulek, Alma calls out to the Lord asking how long will they have to endure this punishment? He asks for the power to free themselves. With that prayer, they were given power and were able to break free from the cords with which they were bound. When everyone saw this miracle, they became very frightened and were making for the doors of the building. They knew that they were now in trouble.

With these leaders chatting them for seemingly not having the power to free themselves and thinking they had these two prophets under their control, they now knew these two did indeed have the power they said they had and they knew they were in grave danger as Alma and Amulek had said they were in their sermons to the people of Ammonihah. I think they knew they were dead men.

Alma 14:27 And it came to pass that so great was their fear that they fell to the earth, and did not obtain the outer door of the prison; and the earth shook mightily, and the walls of the prison were rent in twain, so that they fell to the earth; and the chief judge, and the lawyers, and priests, and teachers, who smote upon Alma and Amulek, were slain by the fall thereof.

However, they were so frightened that they collapsed and were not able to make their escape from the prison. The reason being, that there was a great shaking of the ground under the prison. As a result, the walls of the prison began to collapse and they fell upon the lawyers, priests and teachers, crushing all those who had been physically abusive to Alma and Amulek.

Alma 14:28 And Alma and Amulek came forth out of the prison, and they were not hurt; for the Lord had granted unto them power, according to their faith which was in Christ. And they straightway came forth out of the prison; and they were loosed from their bands; and the prison had fallen to the earth, and every soul within the walls thereof, save it were Alma and Amulek, was slain; and they straightway came forth into the city.

Alma and Amulek escaped without injury from the collapsing prison. The Lord had given them power to break free of their bonds and avoid any hurt as they left the prison. However, the others in the building did not escape and lay dead in the rubble. They then made their way back to the city limits of Ammonihah.

Alma 14:29 Now the people having heard a great noise came running together by multitudes to know the cause of it; and when they saw Alma and Amulek coming forth out of the prison, and the walls thereof had fallen to the earth, they were struck with great fear, and fled from the presence of Alma and Amulek even as a goat fleeth with her young from two lions; and thus they did flee from the presence of Alma and Amulek.

The noise of the collapsing prison walls was heard in town and the people rushed into the streets to see the source of the noise. They then spotted Alma and Amulek heading towards them with the destroyed prison behind them. They were now struck with great fear and tried to get away from the two coming towards them. They were like a goat with it’s kids trying to get away from a two hungry lions.
