2 Nephi 27:1 - 27:5

2 Nephi 27:1 But, behold, in the last days, or in the days of the Gentiles—yea, behold all the nations of the Gentiles and also the Jews, both those who shall come upon this land and those who shall be upon other lands, yea, even upon all the lands of the earth, behold, they will be drunken with iniquity and all manner of abominations—

In the last days or just before the second coming, all the people on the earth will be engulfed in sin. Their life styles will in no way be pleasing to the Lord. This applies to those in the Americans and throughout the rest of the world. All peoples will so caught up in their won lifestyles that they will not want to come to the Lord. They will think they are ok and don’t think they need the Lord.

2 Nephi 27:2 And when that day shall come they shall be visited of the Lord of Hosts, with thunder and with earthquake, and with a great noise, and with storm, and with tempest, and with the flame of devouring fire.

But to wake them up to their degraded condition, the Lord will send all sorts of natural disasters to them such as winds, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

2 Nephi 27:3 And all the nations that fight against Zion, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision; yea, it shall be unto them, even as unto a hungry man which dreameth, and behold he eateth but he awaketh and his soul is empty; or like unto a thirsty man which dreameth, and behold he drinketh but he awaketh and behold he is faint, and his soul hath appetite; yea, even so shall the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.

Nations that think that if they are in control that they will bring peace and happiness to their people will find that it does not work. They will find that they are just as distressed as before because they do not have the gospel in their lives. They will be like a man who is hungry and when he eats he is not satisfied. He will be continually looking for satisfaction but will not find it because he is looking to his own wisdom and not looking to the Lord for direction. Those nations which think they can get along without God will be compared to those who fight against God. Anyone not wanting to follow the dictates of God is fighting against Him. All nations thus fighting against God will fail in the end.

2 Nephi 27:4 For behold, all ye that doeth iniquity, stay yourselves and wonder, for ye shall cry out, and cry; yea, ye shall be drunken but not with wine, ye shall stagger but not with strong drink.

The effect of this fighting against God will be compared to a man who is drunk looking for more drink. He will think that if he is not happy with what he drank so far more drink will do the trick. But, of course, it not more drink that they need, it is the gospel and they will continue to seek more drink but it will not satisfy as will the gospel.

2 Nephi 27:5 For behold, the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep. For behold, ye have closed your eyes, and ye have rejected the prophets; and your rulers, and the seers hath he covered because of your iniquity.

They could have been satisfied by accepting the gospel but they have rejected the prophets which tried to bring to them the gospel of satisfaction. And the Lord has taken them from the people so they are on your own. Being on your own is like being in a deep sleep trying to wake up but can’t quite get your eyes open.
