Mosiah 2:31 - 2:35

Mosiah 2:31 And now, my brethren, I would that ye should do as ye have hitherto done. As ye have kept my commandments, and also the commandments of my father, and have prospered, and have been kept from falling into the hands of your enemies, even so if ye shall keep the commandments of my son, or the commandments of God which shall be delivered unto you by him, ye shall prosper in the land, and your enemies shall have no power over you.

King Benjamin wants the people to obey his son Mosiah, their new king, just like they have done with him and his father Mosiah. Because they have done so they have prospered and been protected by the Lord. If they will continue, they will enjoy the same blessings.

Mosiah 2:32 But, O my people, beware lest there shall arise contentions among you, and ye list to obey the evil spirit, which was spoken of by my father Mosiah.

But they need to be careful of arguing with each other over policies of the government. If there is arguing then the spirit of the devil is present. You can always know if the devil is influencing people’s actions if you see contentions among the population. Benjamin’s father spoke of it often.
[Obviously, this is aimed at us in our day. One cannot help see this same situation going on in our government today. Particularly since our system seems to have the people in two camps, the Democrats and Republicans. There cannot help but be contention and arguing between the two group in their competing for power and influence. However, as King Benjamin shows us both are wrong and only the loyalty to the gospel will bring peace. But that is not going to happen and we will see contention grow over time.]

Mosiah 2:33 For behold, there is a wo pronounced upon him who listeth to obey that spirit; for if he listeth to obey him, and remaineth and dieth in his sins, the same drinketh damnation to his own soul; for he receiveth for his wages an everlasting punishment, having transgressed the law of God contrary to his own knowledge.

For the Lord has said that anyone who will obey and follow satan and dies in the condition will remain in that condition even after death of the body. If he does not repent, he will reap the rewards of damnation which he will know that he has done so and not innocently.

Mosiah 2:34 I say unto you, that there are not any among you, except it be your little children that have not been taught concerning these things, but what knoweth that ye are eternally indebted to your heavenly Father, to render to him all that you have and are; and also have been taught concerning the records which contain the prophecies which have been spoken by the holy prophets, even down to the time our father, Lehi, left Jerusalem;

King Benjamin points out that all the adults and the older children know about these things. The only ones who will not be held accountable are the little children. For these doctrines have been had among the people since the time of Lehi. They all know that it is the Lord that has preserved them and they really cannot repay Him for this preserving them from destruction.

Mosiah 2:35 And also, all that has been spoken by our fathers until now. And behold, also, they spake that which was commanded them of the Lord; therefore, they are just and true.

And all the records made by the Nephites themselves also testify of these things. Both records are contain the words of the Lord and must be followed.
